BMW decided to return to Formula One in the late 1990s by signing an exclusive contract with the Williams team, which needed a new long-term engine supplier after the withdrawal of Renault in 1997. The programme resulted in the creation of a new V10 engine which made its race début in the Williams FW22 in 2000. BMW has raced in Formula 1 before, but it's not planning a comeback anytime soon.

BMW Robert Kubica, BMW, Ricardo Tormo circuit, 2009 Active years: 2006-2009 History BMW only became an official F1 constructor in 2006, but this followed two spells as an engine supplier. The first, in the 1980s, saw it break ground with the first turbo engine to power a driver to world championship success in 1983. The 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed was chock-full of road-going BMWs, but there were also a few notable Formula 1 cars with BMW engines.

BMW has not been part of F1 since 2009, but is not tempted to return for the new 2026 regulations. The BMW M12/13 turbo was a 1,499.8 cc four-cylinder turbocharged Formula One engine, based on the standard BMW M10 engine introduced in 1961, and powered the F1 cars of Brabham, Arrows and Benetton. The M12/13 was initially used by BMW in Formula Two but looking at Renault's success with the fist turbocharged engine in F1 that they introduced in 1977, BMW decided to enter the arena.

The BMW Sauber F1.08 (also known as Sauber C27) was the Formula One racing car with which the BMW Sauber team competed in the 2008 Formula One World Championship.
