BMW decided to return to Formula One in the late 1990s by signing an exclusive contract with the Williams team, which needed a new long-term engine supplier after the withdrawal of Renault in 1997. The programme resulted in the creation of a new V10 engine which made its race début in the Williams FW22 in 2000. BMW has raced in Formula 1 before, but it's not planning a comeback anytime soon.

It's focusing on endurance racing instead. BMW's first victory in 2008 came courtesy of Robert Kubica at the Canadian Grand Prix. But following a disappointing 2009 and feeling the impact of the recession, BMW left Formula One, even though its brand was still technically tied to the team in 2010.

Is BMW an F1 team? The BMW/Williams 2000 Formula 1 campaign was pretty successful for a new partnership and BMW's first year back in the F1 engine production game. While the FW22 was a decent chassis, it was clear that the BMW engine was doing some heavy lifting.

The first, in the 1980s, saw it break ground with the first turbo engine to power a driver to world championship success in 1983. The 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed was chock-full of road-going BMWs, but there were also a few notable Formula 1 cars with BMW engines.

BMW has not been part of F1 since 2009, but is not tempted to return for the new 2026 regulations. The BMW M12/13 turbo was a 1,499.8 cc four-cylinder turbocharged Formula One engine, based on the standard BMW M10 engine introduced in 1961, and powered the F1 cars of Brabham, Arrows and Benetton. The M12/13 was initially used by BMW in Formula Two but looking at Renault's success with the fist turbocharged engine in F1 that they introduced in 1977, BMW decided to enter the arena.
