Expand/CollapseBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Louis W. Hill, Jr.Louis W. Hill, Jr. was born in Saint Paul on May 19, 1902, the son of the president of the Great Northern Railway and the grandson of its founder, James J. Hill. His siblings included Cortlandt, Maud, and Jerome Hill. He was educated at the Saint Paul Academy, Phillips Exeter Academy, and Yale University.

Prior to his election to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1936, he worked for the Great Northern Railway (1927-29) and for the First National Bank of Saint Paul (1930-1934). He became vice president of the Arthur Iron Mining Company (Saint Paul) in 1934, serving in that capacity for the remainder of his career, including the years he served in the legislature. Hill represented the fortieth district continuously until his 1952 defeat. Hill ran again in 1954, but was again defeated.

Hill married Dorthy Millett in 1929, but later divorced. He remarried Elsi Fors in 1932. Together they had three children: Louis Fors, Johanna, and Mari. Elsi Fors died in January 1990, and Hill passed on April 6, 1995.
