Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

Kwame McDonald's files document his work as executive director of the Minnesota State Commission Against Discrimination (1961-1965) and the Governor's Council on Youth (1983-1987), and contain materials on minority issues confronting St. Paul's Summit-University Neighborhood, particularly those relating to crime and community-police relations. They document his promotion of youth programs, particularly sports, and with the David M. Winfield Foundation for Underprivileged Children and the Harry W. Davis Foundation, both aimed at improving economic conditions in the area and aiding Black youth in educational and health matters. Another Black organization, the Inner City Youth League, is also represented.

A small collection of elementary teacher Mary McDonald's papers contain yearbooks, newsletters, and photographs relating to the Franklin Magnet School, which was located in a low income minority neighborhood. The files contain information on school activities and McDonald's interests in the school's neighborhood.
