Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen (BRT) was founded at Oneonta, New York, in 1883 as a protective and insurance organization for its members. In the late 1950s it affiliated itself with the AFL-CIO. In 1969 the BRT merged with the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, the Order of Railway Conductors and Brakemen, and the Switchmen's Union of North America to form the United Transportation Union (UTU).

The Grand Lodge (general office) of the BRT was located at Cleveland, Ohio. Individually-numbered subordinate BRT lodges, which organized or grouped together by carrier, were located in cities and towns along the various companies' lines. Each subordinate lodge was headed by a local chairman.

The local chairmen referred their members' claims and grievances to the chairman of the General Grievance Committee (frequently referred to in the records as the general chairman), who in turn submitted the claims to the appropriate officers of the Great Western, appealing if necessary to the Vice President - Personnel or to the National Railroad Adjustment Board for favorable resolution.

The Chicago Great Western Railway Company (CGW) was incorporated in 1892. In 1968 the CGW was merged into the Chicago and North Western Railway Company (C&NW) (known after 1972 as the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company), a competitor which subsequently abandoned most of the Great Western trackage. The C&NW was merged into the Union Pacific Railroad Company in 1995.

Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The collection includes labor agreements, subject files, claim and award files, and publications; records and member files of UTU Local 650 (Twin Cities), Local 757 (St. James, Minn.), and Local 282 (Waseca, Minn.) and their predecessors; minutes and ledgers of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers Division 333 (Saint Paul); and historical data on the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad Company.

The collection includes subject and claim files of the BRT-CGW General Grievance Committee and include agreements between the BRT and the CGW with regard to specific issues, policies, and practices; employee timetables; employee rosters and seniority lists; and information about issues concerning brakemen, conductors, and yardmen. There is information about some other operating unions and brotherhoods, and about the Des Moines and Central Iowa Railway Company, the Des Moines Union Railway Company, and the Iowa Transfer Railway Company. Claim files include correspondence and memoranda, ex parte briefs, transcripts of investigative hearings, and other supporting documentation complaining of violations by the CGW of rules and agreements, appealing dismissals and disciplinary measures imposed by the CGW upon members of the BRT, and appealing unfavorable decisions by lower-level CGW officials and managers. The bulk of the files relate to time and mileage claims.
