HISTORICAL NOTE
The Geological
Society of Minnesota (GSM) traces its origins to the 1938 merger of an earth science
club at the Minneapolis Public Library and a group led by Edward P. Burch that was
concerned with acquiring an accurate knowledge of the bedrock under the city of
Minneapolis. GSM was incorporated in 1939 as a nonprofit educational organization
for the purpose of stimulating an interest in geology. The Society started a series
of lectures and field trips. In 1949 GSM began a project to erect bronze markers
around the state at points of geological interest. Since 1950 lectures have
continued at the University of Minnesota and since about 1960 educational exhibits
have been mounted at the Minnesota State Fair.
