The organization was formed in 1969 to promote, support, coordinate, and advocate voluntarism and professionalism among individuals involved in the administration of volunteer programs as either paid or unpaid staff. Members are from state and county departments of human services; private, state and county hospitals; nursing homes; schools; clubs; and other organizations that depend on volunteers to help with their programs. The organization sponsors seminars, training sessions, and a Job Bank which advertises opportunities for volunteer directors. It is affiliated with the American Association for Volunteer Administration.
