HISTORICAL NOTE
Minnesota Worldwide Women was organized in April 1984 to further the goals and momentum of the United Nations Decade for Women (1976-1985), to increase awareness among Minnesotans of the global nature of women's activism, and to provide a link enabling Minnesota women to participate consciously in the growing global women's movement. It created forums to give women and interested men an opportunity to learn about the Decade for Women and the Forward Looking Strategies document produced at a world conference held in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1985, and to reflect on local issues within a local context.
The organization was governed by a steering committee composed of women interested in the implications of a global connection for Minnesota women. Using the United Nations' Forward looking strategies for the advancement of women to the year 2000 (FLS) as a framework, the organization began the process of coalition building. The UN document was divided into five sections: equality, development, peace, areas of special concern, and international and regional cooperation. The organization also focused on educating rural and minority women to become aware not only of local problems but also of the global implications of women's concerns.
The main projects of the group were: FLS and Agenda 2000. Other smaller projects were Revolutionary Tea Parties and Global Sisterhood Projects. Minnesota Worldwide Women also produced a newsletter and curriculum material to be used in helping study groups of women and girls to become aware of the problems and opportunities facing them.
In 1993 the organization merged with the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The records document many of the programs and projects developed by the organization but are concerned more with administrative concerns and fund raising efforts. Subjects of the organization's programs include women and social change, economic justice, leadership, youth, and international cooperation among women.
