Expand/CollapseBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Margaret Louise Andrews HarperMargaret L. Andrews was born in Strawberry Point, Iowa to Louis Kossuth Andrews and his wife Samantha Relief (Cole) Andrews. Margaret's family eventually moved to rural Clearwater, Minnesota, where they were farming when Stanley Harper arrived in the area and Margaret became acquainted with him.

Stanley James Harper (1894-1971) was the son of Joseph Lister Harper and Carrie May (Felt) Harper. He had one sister, Josephine Louise (1892-1911), who died of pneumonia while a student at Wellesley College. Joseph L. Harper was a partner in the Winston, Harper, Fisher Company, a Minneapolis wholesale grocery firm. Stanley grew up in Minneapolis, and graduated from West High School (1911) and the University of Minnesota (1916). He then moved to rural Clearwater to manage a small farm there owned by his family. In 1918 he entered the army and, after training at Camp Dodge, Iowa, served in France with the Headquarters Company, 349th Infantry Regiment, of the American Expeditionary Force. Stanley's regiment was discharged in June 1919.

During Stanley's service in World War I Margaret managed the Harper farm and, with the help of her father and her brother Clifford, cared for the livestock and began to renovate the dilapidated farmhouse.

Stanley and Margaret were married on June 26, 1919. They lived on the Harper farm at Clearwater until 1920, when they moved to Minneapolis where Stanley worked as a salesman for L. E. Doudiet & Company Inc., "importers of food stuffs." In 1923 and 1924 he was secretary of the firm, and by 1925 had been made secretary-treasurer.

The name of the business was changed to Tew-Harper Company around 1925 when Mr. Doudiet retired and Arthur O. Tew purchased his interest in the firm. Tew-Harper was a partnership, with Tew the senior partner/investor and Stanley Harper the junior partner/investor. They were wholesalers of specialty foods, primarily bulk chocolate, imported and domestic nuts, and imported tea. The business was liquidated by 1955 following the death of Mr. Tew.

Stanley served as secretary-treasurer of Tew-Harper from 1926 to 1953. He was later president of a Minneapolis organization called Fraternal Associates, Inc. (approximately 1955-approximately 1967). Stanley was a lifelong photography enthusiast, and was a member of the Minneapolis Camera Club. He died on March 28, 1971 while on vacation with Margaret in Florida.

Margaret was a housewife during her years in Minneapolis. She and Stanley had six surviving children: Josephine L. (1920-2003), Helen Margaret (1923-1983), Elizabeth Jean (b. 1924), Ruth Virginia (b. 1928), Kathryn Adele (1929-1990), and James Lister (b. 1934). A baby boy born in 1922 lived for only one day. The Harpers divided their time between their Minneapolis house and a home on Lake Minnetonka, west of the city. In their retirement years Stanley and Margaret traveled widely and spent their winters in Florida.

Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The collection documents the life of a Minneapolis family through four generations. There is information about the death of a daughter/older sister, a young man's service in World War I, his marriage to a farm girl from Iowa, the raising of six children in a comfortable neighborhood, the children's establishment of their own families and careers, and about the travels of a retired couple and the winters they spent in Florida. There is also information about and some material from ancestors going back several generations.

The collection consists of personal and family papers and materials, including diaries, genealogical information, correspondence, picture postcards, travel diaries and trip expense journals, clippings, photographs, and scrapbooks. There are very few business records or papers.

The bulk of the collection materials relate to Margaret Harper. There is information about Margaret's and Stanley's parents and siblings; ancestors and relatives in several family groups; Stanley's service with the U.S. Army during World War I (1918-1919), including training at Camp Dodge (Iowa), wartime experiences in France, and a leave spent in Monte Carlo; his marriage to Margaret Andrews (1919); and the couple's time spent on a small farm near Clearwater, Minnesota (1919-1920). The few business papers relate to the Tew-Harper Company and the Winston, Harper, Fisher Company. Travel diaries and much of the correspondence document Stanley and Margaret's travels in their retirement years, including winters spent in Florida. There is some information about Trinity Baptist Church (Minneapolis), which the Harpers attended for many years. Correspondents are almost entirely family members and friends.

Included as well are some documents relating to Wallace Kelsey's service in the 12th Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War. Kelsey was the husband of Lucinda Crippen.

The researcher should be aware that there were two Josephine Harpers: Josephine Louise Harper (1892-1911), Stanley Harper's older sister (sometimes referred to as "Josephine I" in the donor's notes found scattered throughout the collection), and Josephine Louise Harper (b. 1920), Stanley and Margaret's oldest child and the donor of the Harper Papers. In March, 1989 the latter Josephine married Clifton Lee Darling (b. 1911) and became Josephine Harper Darling. Her initials (JHD) appear in annotations and on informational notes found at various places in the collection.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Expand/CollapseMARGARET L. HARPER PAPERS

Diaries (1933-1961) contain information about family, social, and personal activities, trips and excursions, and happenings at Trinity Community Church, a Baptist-affiliated congregation in Minneapolis that the Harpers attended. Calendar diaries (1949-1976) are a continuation of the diaries. Travel diaries (1947-1977) were kept on extended automobile trips taken by Margaret and Stanley (mainly in their retirement years), including visits to daughters living in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, and during winter vacations on Sanibel Island, near Fort Myers, Florida. Trip expense journals record amounts of money expended on some of these trips.

Letters Received (1917-1919) include letters from Margaret's future in-laws, Carrie and Joseph Harper, and from Carrie's mother Emily L. (Crippen) Felt. Most of these were written to Margaret at the Clearwater farm while she was living there during Stanley's tour of duty with the U.S. Army in France. These letters thank Margaret for managing the farm and for her efforts to get the farmhouse clean and into good repair. They report on Harper family activities and give the latest news about Stanley. Joseph's letters describe his visits to his son during training at Camp Dodge and report on Stanley's experiences and his routine there. His letters also concern management of the farm.

Later letters received from family and friends relate mostly to family activities and events. There are also condolences received upon the loss of Margaret's baby boy (1922) and at the time of Stanley's death (1971). Letter writers include Margaret's father, cousins and other relatives, and a host of friends. Penciled-in dates appearing on many of the letters (usually preceded by the annotation "P.M.") were taken from postmarks on their envelopes.

Margaret's papers include information about her genealogical research (and about the Andrews, Cole, Main, and Sansburn families to which she was related); associations, clubs, and societies of which she was a member; Trinity Community Church; and winters spent in Florida.

Expand/CollapseSTANLEY J. HARPER PAPERS

Includes information about Stanley's service in World War I. Letters written to Margaret during this period (1917-1919) describe his days at Camp Dodge, wartime experiences in France, a leave spent in Monte Carlo, and his shipment home and arrival in New York City. His letters also talk about the operation and management of the farm, and about a small cheese factory which apparently was located on the farm. A folder of small snapshot photographs which Stanley made at Camp Dodge, in France, and en route home is found in the photographs section of the collection.

There is information about associations, clubs, and societies of which Stanley was a member. A biographical chronology prepared by the cataloger includes data on Stanley, Margaret, and their children. Genealogical information includes a narrative by Lucy Antoinette Crippen Bailey (1834-1931) relating the migration of the Crippens from New York state to Illinois in the 1840s and, later, to Wisconsin. This file also contains some historical notes about Prescott, Wisconsin, and some information about the Felt, Loomis, Tullar, Crippen, Furber, McChesney, and Bailey families, many of whose members lived in or near Prescott, Wisconsin and Cottage Grove, Minnesota. An account book (1804-1817) kept by one Joel Crippen is the earliest item in the collection.

There are some stock certificates and other material related to the Tew-Harper Company, and a ledger and some advertisements and price lists related to the Winston, Harper, Fisher Company.

A group of Josephine L. Harper's papers (Stanley's sister) includes a scrapbook she kept while a student at Wellesley College, an obituary and letters of condolence received by her parents at the time of her death (1911), and letters (1980-1981) from an old classmate to Josephine Harper Darling recalling Josephine's college days. Also included is a diploma earned by Josephine upon her graduation in 1909 from the Graham Hall School for Girls, Minneapolis, a forerunner of the Northrop Collegiate School for Girls.

Stanley's travel diaries describe many of the same trips that Margaret's volumes describe. Miscellaneous volumes include a diary kept by Stanley during the last few weeks of his military service and a list of the members of the Minneapolis Camera Club.
