Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

Chartered March 5, 1956 and incorporated January 24, 1957 as the Minneapolis Chapter (#122) of The Indoor Sports Club, Inc., the Disabled Citizens Club was organized to improve the "social, educational, and recreational conditions of the physically handicapped of the state of Minnesota" (articles of incorporation, Jan. 19, 1957). Membership was open to any physically handicapped adult. In December, 1981 the chapter voted to disaffiliate from the national-level Indoor Sports Club because of an increase in national dues and because members were not utilizing the affiliation's services. The group conducted business as the Minneapolis Chapter prior to adopting the name Disabled Citizens Club in September, 1982.
