Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The foundation was established on June 1, 1946. It was endowed by lumberman Clifton R. Musser (1869-1956) and his wife Margaret Kulp Musser (1875-1967) of Muscatine, Iowa. Its principal office was moved from St. Paul to Boulder, Colorado in 1985.

The General Service Foundation contributed to organizations and projects concerned with population control, private higher education, the environment, and the conservation of natural resources. It also made major contributions in the areas of religion and international, industrial, and race relations, many involving projects in Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean area. The foundation preferred to support new, experimental, demonstration, or research projects. It generally did not make grants to individuals or for operating budgets, endowment funds, annual campaigns, capital purposes, or for relief.

Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The collection includes annual reports, grant application logs, some background files on education and population, a corporate record book (1946-1977), directors' meetings agenda books, and financial statements and reports. The bulk of the material consists of project files, which contain requests for grants, correspondence between foundation officials and grantees, progress reports, and other papers relating to more than 1,000 separate projects funded by the foundation from the 1950s to the 1990s. There are also some project reports.

Most of the files are from the St. Paul office of John M. Musser, a son of Clifton R. Musser and president (1946-1985) of the foundation. There are also some files of John Musser's wife, Elizabeth W. (Betty) Musser. Later material (1985-1995) is from the Boulder office of Robert W. Musser (president) and Marcie J. Musser (secretary/treasurer).
