Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

Minneapolis, Northfield and Southern Railway Company logoThe Minneapolis, Northfield and Southern Railway Company (MN&S) was a Minneapolis-based short line railroad incorporated in 1918 as a successor to the Minneapolis, St. Paul, Rochester, and Dubuque Electric Traction Company (the Dan Patch line). The company operated a main line between Minneapolis and Northfield, Minnesota. Principal stockholders for many years included the Pence family interests and the Red River Lumber Company. Officers included Harry E. Pence, Archie D. Walker, and W. R. Stephens. In a 1979 reorganization the company’s railroad operations were transferred to a newly-formed subsidiary corporation, Minneapolis, Northfield and Southern Railway, Inc., and in 1980 the Minneapolis, Northfield and Southern Railway Company name was changed to Glen Valley Realty, Inc. The Soo Line Railroad Company purchased the company in 1982.

The Electric Short Line Terminal Company was incorporated in 1908 as the Electric Short Line Railroad Company; the name was changed to Electric Short Line Terminal Company in 1915. In 1956 the company was merged into the MN&S.
