The Minnesota College Personnel Association (MCPA) was chartered in 1969 as a state
division of the American College Personnel Association. It was also a division of
the Minnesota Personnel and Guidance Association.
The association sought to provide state leadership of college student personnel
workers in promoting programs in guidance, counseling, and student personnel
practices. It worked for the development and maintenance of professional standards,
encouraged research and experimentation, and provided opportunities for the
discussion and exchange of ideas among professional college student personnel
workers: counselors, academic advisors, admissions officers, campus ministers,
career planning professionals, financial aid officers, placement officers, activity
directors, health service professionals, higher education faculty, graduate
students, student affairs deans, and others. Members included staff from University
of Minnesota campuses, state universities, community colleges, private colleges, and
vocational schools and technical colleges.
The association offered its members conferences and workshops on such topics as
retention, wellness and stress management, chemical abuse, sexual sensitization and
desensitization, human development, financial aid, innovations in counseling,
financial management for administrators in higher education, and values and
multicultural concerns in higher education. It published a journal and a
newsletter.
