Expand/CollapseBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Collapse/ExpandMerrill Family

Nathaniel Merrill (1610-1655) was born in Whitshire, England and came to the United States to settle at Newbury, Massachusetts in 1633. He married Susanna Jorden (d.1673), with whom he had seven children. Their fourth child, Daniel Merrill (1642-1717), married Sarah Clough. After her death he remarried to Sara Rowell Page. Daniel's sixth child, Moses Merrill (1683-), and his wife Mary had ten children. The youngest, named Daniel (1723-), married Elizabeth Clough in 1744. They had eight children, and he had two more with his second wife, Anna. Daniel's fourth child, Elias Merrill (1750-1802), married Rhoda True; he later remarried to Abagail Lanksford. His and Rhoda's son Jabez (1779-1855) married Sarah Briggs (1788-1864) in 1805. Their youngest child, Albert Leonard Merrill (1825-1860), married Esther Jane Littlefield (1831-1860) in 1854. They had one child, Harry Leonard Merrill (1857-1932), who was born in Auburn, Maine. Harry moved to Hutchinson, Minnesota in 1882, where he became superintendent of schools (1882-1915). He married Martha A. Harrington (1858-1946) on June 30, 1886 in Hutchinson. They had two children, Lewis Harrington Merrill (1887-) and Mary E. (1896-1896). Lewis married Genevieve Wingen in 1917, with whom he had two children: Ruth Maureen (1918-1997), who married Follmer Petersen, and Doris May Laatsch (1923-).

Collapse/ExpandHarrington Family

John and Ann (née Clinton) Harrington emigrated to Boston about 1630. Their eldest son, Robert Harrington (1616-1707), emigrated at a later date, settling in Watertown, Massachusetts. He married Susanna George (1632-1694) and together they had six children. Their son Thomas Harrington (1665-1712) married Rebecca Bemis. Their son Ebenezer Harrington (1687-1754), born in Framingham, Massachusetts, married Hapsiba Cloyes. They settled in Waltham, Massachusetts in 1709 and had seven children. Their third child, Joshua Harrington, first married Sarah Nurse. He later married Elizabeth (Betty) Bent (née Reed). After 1777 his family moved to Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire. Joshua had four children. The oldest son, John Harrington (1752-1802), became a doctor. He married Deborah Wakefield (1756-1830) in 1774 and they had four children. John Harrington II (1785-1857) was born in Halifax, Vermont. He married Rhoda Kee and they had seven children. Their youngest son, Lewis Iddings Harrington (1830-1884), was born in Green, Ohio. He married Ellen Myra Pendergast (1836-1915) in December 1857 in Hutchinson, Minnesota. They had two children: Martha A. Harrington (1858-) and William Edmund Harrington (1860-). Martha married Harry Leonard Merrill in 1886.

Collapse/ExpandPendergast Family

Stephen Pendergast (1690-1753) came to the United States from Wexford Province, Munster, Ireland between 1715 and 1720. He lived in New Hampshire and married Jane Cotton (1702-1754) in 1727. Together they had nine children. Their son Edmund (1733-1765) married Hannah Langley (1735-1780) in Durham, New Hampshire. They had three children. Their oldest son, Edmund II (1760-1846), married twice. He and his first wife, Olive, had three children. Edmund II remarried to Lydia Murray (1770-1838), with whom he had five children. Their youngest son was Solomon Pendergast (1808-1882). He married Lydia Wiggin (-1848) in 1832. Together they had five children. The oldest child was William Wirt Pendergast (1833-). After Lydia's death Solomon remarried to Judith Mathews (1828-1908), with whom he had two more children.

Solomon Pendergast traveled from New England to Minnesota, beginning his journey on September 3, 1855. He stopped in Milwaukee to meet his son, William, and they came to Hutchinson on April 20, 1856. Solomon brought the rest of his family to Hutchinson on August 6, 1858. His daughter, Ellen Myra Pendergast (1836-1915), married Lewis Iddings Harrington in 1857. They had two children: Martha A. and William Edmund.

Collapse/ExpandLittlefield Family

William Haskell (1617-1693) emigrated from England about 1637 to Gloucester, Massachusetts. His son, Joseph Haskell (1646-1727), was born in Gloucester on June 2, 1646. Joseph's second son, Joseph II (1681-1768), married Sarah Davis. Their daughter, Sara Haskell, married Zebalon Lufkin (1723-1818). Sarah and Zebalon's son, Benjamin, married Lydia Griffin. Benjamin and Lydia's daughter, Esther (1795-1840), was born in Freeport, Maine. She married Moses Littlefield (1794-) and together they had eight children. Their fifth child, Esther Jane Littlefield (1831-1860), married Albert Leonard Merrill.

Mathew Briggs moved from Naton, Massachusetts to Dighton, Massachusetts around 1700. His son, Daniel Briggs (-1757), married Ann Hathaway and they had four children. Their third child, William Briggs (1743-1820), married Weighstill Sumner in 1770; she died in 1772 in Taunton, Massachusetts. He then remarried to Sarah French (1750-1831). They moved to East Auburn, Maine in 1797. William and Sarah had ten children. Their daughter, Sarah, married Jabez Merrill. Jabez and Sarah's youngest child, Albert Leonard Merrill (1825-1860), married Esther Jane Littlefield (1831-1860) in 1854. They had one child, Harry L. Merrill (1857-), who was born in Auburn, Maine. Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

Family papers collected by Martha A. Merrill, which document the Merrill, Harrington, Pendergast, and other adjoining families from their arrival in Hutchinson, Minnesota during the mid-1800s through 1946. Two family histories, possibly compiled by William Henry Harrington, trace the family from immigration through the 1920s following the lineage of Martha A. and Harry Leonard Merrill to their grandchildren Ruth Maureen Petersen and Doris May Laatsch. The papers consist largely of family correspondence, supplemented by photographs, diaries, journals, business records, and deeds. Most family correspondence was received by Ellen Myra Harrington and her daughter Martha A. Merrill. Both women saved correspondence from their spouses, children, friends, and extended family members. There are letters from Timothy Harrison Pendergast and Frank M. Harrington while serving in the Civil War, and from Lewis Harrington Merrill while serving in World War I. The bulk of the materials fall between 1870 and 1900.

The families were also very involved with the communities of Hutchinson and Glencoe, Minnesota. Thus the business and personal letters reflect commerce, agriculture, development, schools, and social and community events. The business papers are dominated by the incoming correspondence of Lewis Iddings Harrington. He was elected McLeod County Commissioner in 1857; served as Justice of the Peace, 1858-1860; and was also a notary public, surveyor, and real estate broker. Harry L. Merrill, Solomon Pendergast, Lewis Harrington Merrill, and others are represented as well. Business topics include surveying, banking, land assessments and sales, railroads, taxes, education, politics, and legislation. The bulk of the business papers date from 1870 to 1885.

Included in this collection are some of Daniel L. Jensen's notes from his study of the Hutchinson community and Timothy Harrison Pendergast's service in the Civil War. These consist of research and genealogy notes, transcripts of letters, and interviews with family members. Among the interviews are reminiscences of Ellen Myra Harrington, as told by her daughter, Martha, and grandson, Lewis, concerning the Dakota Indian uprising against the community of Hutchinson (1862) and the killing of Chief Little Crow.
