Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The Minnesota Radiological Society was organized in 1928 as the Twin City Radiological Society, to serve radiologists and graduate students in radiology in the metropolitan area. It was opened to statewide membership in December of 1928, with membership also coming from North and South Dakota and Iowa. Its purpose was to promote fellowship, to advance the study and practice of radiology, and to advance interest in the society. The society was also concerned with legislation affecting hospital regulations and health care providers, particularly Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota.

In 1934 the Russell D. Carmen Scholarship was established to provide funds for visiting lecturers. It supported an annual lecture on some aspect of radiology given before the Minnesota State Medical Association.

The Minnesota Radiological Society later became a chapter of the American College of Radiology.

Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The records include the constitution and bylaws, historical notes, a list of officers (1928-1986), and a chronological series of records consisting of minutes of meetings (1930-1997), correspondence, treasurer's reports, newsletters, program curricula,

memoranda, committee reports, membership information, and miscellaneous material. From 1948 on, materials for each year have been pulled together into volumes.

Meetings were held every winter, fall and spring. The program for each meeting concerned some particular aspect of the specialty. Beginning in 1931 there was discussion of the use of radiology in cancer treatment. IN 1934, while praising Minneapolis for screening employees of the board of education for tuberculosis, the society protested the use of non-radiologists to interpret the pictures. Proceedings of the annual meeting are published in Minnesota Medicine beginning in 1936.

The records document the formation and functioning of various committees concerned with specific areas of patient care: maternal, industrial, public health, education, diagnostic, nuclear, ultrasonography, therapeutic, breast imaging, angiography - interventional digital, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Other committees were concerned with standards and medical insurance, judicial affairs, technologists liaison, legislative and public relations, and liaisons to the American College of Radiology.
