Henry George TeiganHenry George Teigan was born in Forest City, Winnebago County, Iowa, August 7, 1881, to Anders Olson and Brita (Monson) Teigan. He attended Luther Academy (Albert Lea, Minnesota) and Central College (Pella, Iowa), and was graduated from Valparaiso University (Indiana) in 1908. He taught in Iowa and North Dakota rural schools and served as secretary to the North Dakota Socialist Party from 1913 to 1916 before moving to Minneapolis in 1917. He was secretary of the National Nonpartisan League from 1916 to 1923 and secretary to Senator Magnus Johnson from 1923 to 1925. In 1932 he was elected to the Minnesota State Senate from District 29 (Hennepin County) serving until January 7, 1935. In 1936 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives from the third congressional district, representing the Farmer-Labor Party. He was an unsuccessful candidate for re-election in 1938 and again in 1940. After his service in Congress he resumed newspaper and editorial work until his death on March 12, 1941, in Minneapolis. On March 29, 1900 he married Ethel Lorraine Herbert.

The collection includes information dealing with political matters, election returns from Minnesota and neighboring states, and clippings and other data on politicians, especially Elmer A. Benson, William E. Borah, Arthur Capper, Dewey W. Johnson, Hiram W. Johnson, Magnus Johnson, Robert M. La Follette, George H. Lommen, Ernest Lundeen, Floyd B. Olson, Thomas B. Schall, Henrik Shipstead, and Burton K. Wheeler. There is extensive information on House and Senate bills, resolutions, acts, and amendments considered by the Minnesota legislature; on its Senate investigating committees; and on railroad matters, taxation, education in Minnesota, and relief measures for the unemployed. Materials also include some files relating to the United States Civil Service Commission, election materials, political literature and speeches, petitions, and a few photographs.
