BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Nicholas David
Coleman was born in Saint Paul on February 23, 1925, the son of David and Hanna
(Kennedy) Coleman. He graduated from Cretin High School (Saint Paul), and received a
B.A. degree in political science from the University of St. Thomas. Coleman served
in the United States Navy during World War II as a Signalman 2nd Class. He
volunteered for the 1948 congressional campaign of Eugene McCarthy. He was elected
to the Minnesota State Senate in 1962, serving District 45 (1963-1966), District 46
(1967-1972) and District 65 (1973-1980). From 1973 to 1980 he served as the Senate
Majority Leader. Coleman died in Saint Paul of leukemia on March 5, 1981.
Coleman married Bridget Rosemarie Finnegan (1949) and Deborah C. Howell (1975). His seven children included Nicholas J., Patrick, Brendan, Christopher, Emmett, Maureen, and Meghan.
