HISTORICAL NOTE
The Twin Cities Opera Guild, originally known as the Women's Guild of St. Paul Civic Opera, was founded in 1952 with the purpose to "promote public interest in music, music education, and culture and to assist groups and organizations in the promotion and produciton of operas, musical entertainment, and other related activities." The name of the organization changed to the Women's Guild of the St. Paul Opera some time during the late 1960s, and adopted the name Twin Cities Opera Guild in 1977 or 1978. It was the first organization of its kind of United States outside of New York.
Activities of Guild included sponsoring such opportunities as scholarships and master classes for aspiring opera performers; matinee performances of Minnesota Opera and other local opera company productions for school children; productions by the children themselves; opera broadcasts on public radio; and adult education seminars. A major component of the organization's work was to work with schools to make opera attendance a part of the curriculum. Activities were funded through membership fees and events such as the Guild's annual candlelight dinners.
