HISTORICAL NOTE
The United Spanish War Veterans was organized in April 1904 from the amalgamation of five other Spanish-American War veterans' groups: the Spanish War Veterans, the Spanish American War Veterans, Service Men of the Spanish War, the Legion of Spanish War Veterans, and the Veteran Army of the Philippines. The goals of the organization were to honor the memory and preserve the graves of Spanish-American War veterans, to assist veterans and their widows and orphans, to perpetuate the memories of the war, to collect and preserve the records of service of the members, and to inculcate certain patriotic principles and ethics among all people. The group was organized into state and local subdivisions. The state departments administered local "camps."
Efforts to organize Minnesota veterans had begun as early as 1901 when General L. F. Hubbard convened a group of thirty-eight comrades in Red Wing. The Department of Minnesota was officially chartered in 1903.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
Departmental records include annual convention proceedings and delegate lists, assorted reports, correspondence, financial records, membership rosters and reports, circulars, orders, ritual books, scrapbooks, and various printed issuances.
Auxiliary records include minutes of meetings, annual convention reports, membership records, officers lists and election reports, financial records, circulars, scrapbooks, correspondence of Sara E. Edwards (1946-1952), and minute books of the Sophia Rice Auxiliary (1920-1941).
Also included in the collection are assorted materials from various local branches, primarily Worth Bagley Camp No. 2, including scrapbooks, minutes, rosters, and other miscellany. Also present are scattered records of three related or affiliated organizations, the St. Paul Veteran's Booster Club (1943-1950) and the Ramsey and St. Louis County Bolo clubs (1914-1916).
