SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The books contain regimental and post orders issued by post commanders, particularly Josiah Snelling and Josiah H. Vose, primarily from Fort Snelling and Fort Armstrong, Illinois, pertaining to post administration and regulations, appointments and commissions, courts martial, and supplies for Fort Snelling. Some of the material pertains to Fort Howard, Wisconsin.
The first order book (1819-1824) contains letters and orders from the office of the commissary general of subsistence to Lieutenant Nathan Clark regarding supplies for Fort Snelling. A second order book (1824-1827) records orders and special orders, appointments, and other infantry activities, mainly based out of Fort Snelling. A microfilm copy of a third order book (1824-1828) contains regimental and post orders issued by post commanders, particularly Snelling and Vose, primarily from Fort Snelling and Fort Armstrong, pertaining to post administration and regulations, appointments and commissions, courts martial, and other infantry activities. Included as well are photostatic copies of selected pages from the third order book.

Historical Note: The orders originated in the Office of the Commissary General of Subsistence. There are a few from the Secretary of War and from the Office of the Adjutant and Inspector General. | |||||||||||
Contents: The volume consists of general and special orders (March 31, 1819-June 24, 1824) addressed to Lieutenant Nathan Clark, who was stationed at Fort Snelling from 1819 to 1827. The orders were later bound into a volume by members of Clark's family. The papers deal with the following topics: the procurement and distribution of food and other subsistence stores to the troops, women dependents, sick persons in the hospital, Indians and the Indian Agency at St. Peter's, the problems of transporting the goods up the Mississippi River from St. Louis, procuring millstones for the post's grist mill, procurement of wheat and other staples, the manufacturing of candles, soap, and vinegar, the raising of cattle and swine, the raising of crops, and contracts with Joseph Rolette, Peter Yarnell, James Pendleton, and Silas Craig. Order writers include James H. Hook, George Gibson, Daniel Parker, Charles J. Nourse, and John C. Calhoun. The Calhoun letters are copies written on August 30, 1819, and March 18, 1823. | |||||||||||

Contents: Records orders and special orders, appointments, and other infantry activities mainly based out of Fort Snelling. The volume once included orders dating from January 1824, but the first 34 pages spanning January 1824-January 1826 are now missing. Surviving pages begin with February 1826. | |||||||||||
An index, located in the rear of the book, gives basic information on the orders and appointments found in the volume, including those missing from the front of the volume. | |||||||||||
Pagination and Physical Condition: Pages 255-262 are mis-numbered as 355-362. The back 50 pages or so and the back cover appear to have been damaged by gunfire, as they have what appear to be holes made by buckshot. | |||||||||||

The pages include reports of court martials, minutes of meetings of the post council of administration, and reports of actions of boards of survey. There is information on the use of and regulation of whiskey, the post band and musicians, regulations to improve health and sanitation conditions, fire protection, auctions of the effects of deceased soldiers, the sutler tax, administration of the post library, and the death of Melancton Snelling, son of Josiah Snelling. | |||||||||||
