Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The Minnesota Council of Nonprofits was established in January 1987. It is a statewide membership association of nonprofit organizations sharing information, services, and research to educate its members and the community. The Council has over one thousand members representing all activity areas, budget ranges, and geographic regions of Minnesota. It works in partnership with its members, foundations, businesses, and government to strengthen nonprofits and to provide the information and benefits its members want and need. The Council is governed by a board of directors elected by the membership and representing all regions of Minnesota and every major nonprofit activity area. Services offered by the Council include a library, fax-on-demand, a web site, publications, the Nonprofit News bimonthly members-only newsletter, the monthly members-only publication Members Grants Alert, education and training programs, annual conferences, and cost saving programs and endorsed service providers. The Council was incorporated in December 1986, and was apparently an outgrowth of, or successor to, The Philanthropy Project, which began in 1984.

Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The records include board minutes, committee files, publications and reports, organizational newsletters, clippings, overhead transparencies, subject files, videocassettes, and other material. Most of the material was developed for, and distributed to, member nonprofit organizations and concerns annual meetings, Council-sponsored conferences and workshops, fund raising by nonprofit organizations, strategies for meeting the challenges posed by the reduction of federal funding ("devolution") for various nonprofit organizations and their programs, lobbying, and other issues of concern to the nonprofit sector.

There is a body of material that originated in the office of Marcia Keller Avner, the council's Public Policy Director. Much of this centers on "The Partnership for Minnesota's Future," a joint project of the Council and the Children's Defense Fund--Minnesota to prepare Minnesota nonprofits to respond to federal budget cuts and the so-called "New Federalism."

Correspondents and organizations represented in the collection include Minnesota Council of Nonprofits' executive director Jon Pratt; public policy director Marcia Keller Avner; and officials of the Minnesota Council on Foundations. There is also a doctoral thesis by Michael Byungnam Lee and a series of workshop presentations authored by Minneapolis attorney Eve Rose Borenstein.
