SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The collection consists largely of typed carbon copies of Atherton and Winifred Bean's outgoing correspondence. Some incoming correspondence was retained with the copy. There are also photographs, certificates, and information pertaining to their personal philanthropic gifts, the Athwin Foundation, the F. A. Bean Foundation, and the Western Foundation.
Approximately 4.5 cu. ft. of records pertain to Bean's involvement with such institutions as Carleton College, International Multifoods Corporation, the Mayo Foundation, and the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. These records contain reports, newspaper clippings, and speech files, but are largely correspondence with other executives, trustees, and members of the board. Corrrespondents include John J. Kovarik, Charles Ritz, John William Nason, Slade G. Schuster, and Emmerson Ward.
Bean retained approximately 1.2 cu. ft. of correspondence, reports, articles, and photographs from John Paddock, an archaeologist and ethnographic researcher working in Oaxaca Valley, Mexico. Paddock's correspondence provides an expansive view of his life as a researcher and adminstrator. Atherton and Winifred made financial contribitions to Paddock's research and the Institute de Estudios Oaxaqueños.

ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH
Bean helped fund John Paddock's archaeological and ethnographical research in Oaxaca Valley, Mexico, for nearly 30 years. Paddock was a prolific correspondent, sending Bean letters describing the politics and problems of Mexico, of the Universidad de las Américas, and of the Institute de Éstudios Oaxaqueños. Paddock's letters also describe his research, health, students, workers, and community. The materials are in both Spanish and English.
