Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The Western Foundation was incorporated on June 12, 1939 for the purpose of supporting "religious, charitable, scientific, or educational purposes or for the prevention of cruelty to children or animals, but expressly excluding from its purposes the carrying on of propaganda or otherwise attempting to influence legislation [Western Foundation articles of incorporation, 1939]." The founding trustees were Bertha Boynton Bean, Atherton Bean (Francis Atherton Bean III), and Bertha Bean Flinsch. The foundation's first president was Atherton Bean. On August 18, 1966 the Western Foundation was merged with the F. A. Bean Foundation, a separate foundation created by Francis Atherton Bean, Sr.

Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

Grant files and other records of the Western Foundation. The records largely document the grants awarded to many medical research, social service, and religious organizations in Minnesota and elsewhere. Files include correspondence, pamphlets, progress reports, and some financial statements and annual reports. Especially prominent are Congregational Church organizations and the League to Uphold Congregational Principles, the Sister Kenny Foundation, the Minneapolis Association for Retarded Children, and the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). There is a great deal of crossover between the records of the Western Foundation and the F. A. Bean Foundation.
