Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

Inspired by other attempts at neighborhood activism and frustrated with a perceived lack of social services in the community, the Camden Area Community Concerns Council (CACCC) was formed in 1975 to work with citizens as well as city, school, and library officials to assess community needs and recommend plans and projects for community improvement. The goals of the organization were to further community development, educate residents on civic matters, engage in job development for underemployed and unemployed youths, improve the economic condition of senior citizens, and to generally improve the welfare of the Camden Community. The group sponsored and supported such projects as the establishment of a community center, neighborhood beautification efforts, creating a volunteer network to provide support services to senior citizens, and the reform of harmful real estate sales practices.

Also in the collection are files from other organizations in which CACCC participated or to which it sent delegates, including the Camden Planning District Citizens Advisory Council, which was founded in 1975 as one of ten advisory committees to involve the community in the Community Development Block Grant Program; and the Joint Ministry Project, a city-wide organization of Minneapolis churches and community organizations working to win improvements on issues of concern to its member institutions such as housing, crime, and education.
