| Abstract: | Correspondence, photographs, an obituary, and a funeral program of Gustave Albert Botman of Deer River, Minnesota, who served in the 7th Infantry Division of the United States Army in France during World War I. The bulk of the collection consists of Swedish-language correspondence (September 1918-March 1919) between Botman and his wife Anna while Botman was away serving in the war. English-language translations of the correspondence were made by Charles John LaVine. Gustave is referred to as Albert in the correspondence. | |

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Gustave Albert Botman was born in Wasa, Finland June 9, 1890. He immigrated to the United States in 1908 and settled in Deer River, Minnesota where his grandfather lived and farmed. He enlisted in the United States Army in August 1918 and served as a private in the 7th Infantry during World War I. He was sent to the Western Front in France to participate in attacks on German forces. He was honorably discharged in March, 1919. Botman married Anna Elvira Backlund in Deer River in August, 1917. After the war, he worked for his father-in-law as a farmer and carpenter. The Botmans settled in Deer River, where they were active congregants of Clara Lutheran Church. Gustave was also a founding charter member of the VFW Post 2720 in Deer River, and Anna was involved with its Ladies Auxiliary. Botman died on April 14, 1958 at the Veterans Administration hospital in Minneapolis, and was interred in the Pine Ridge cemetery, Deer River.
