Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

This collection consists of oral history recordings and transcripts, research notes, news clippings, correspondence, and commentary on the lives of Shaun (Jack) Maloney, 1911-1999, and Carl Skoglund, 1884-1960, two principal figures in the 1934 Minneapolis Teamsters Strike. David Riehle spent a good part of the 1980s researching the 1934 strike and the lives of these two men, and this collection contains the research materials that he collected. The Maloney materials, which are slightly more voluminous than the Skoglund items, consist of biographical material, oral history recordings and transcripts, 1988-1997 (some interviews done by Riehle), and correspondence between Maloney and Riehle. Also included are histories of the teamsters union (articles and portions of books), articles on the Minneapolis Druck Drivers' Strike of 1934, information on Local 574 and 544, teamster contracts, and files on Farrell Dobbs and Jimmy Hoffa. There are also eight folders of news clippings on teamster issues from 1931 to 1997. These were sent to Riehle by Maloney and contain numerous annotations and commentary by Maloney. Additional Maloney material contains news clippings, articles, reports, and historical sketches concerning the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union (ILWU), particularly in the Seattle area, where Maloney was a labor official after leaving the Twin Cities after World War II.

The Skoglund material includes biographical information, research notes and background articles, collected references to Skoglund in various Swedish socialist and labor newspapers, drafts of speeches on Skoglund by Riehle, correspondence, interview recordings and transcripts, and photographs.

Also included in the collection are political cartoons collected by Maloney and Riehle; biographies of various labor leaders, such as David Beck and Harry Bridges; trainmen's seniority lists of the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railroad Company; and miscellaneous articles and newspaper clippings related to labor history.
