Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The scrapbooks consist primarily of clippings from Minneapolis and St. Paul (Minn.) newspapers relating to the 13th Regiment in particular and the Spanish American War in general. They were probably assembled by a member of the Cressy family in Minnesota.

Most of the sermons are identified with a title, a citation to scriptural text, and the date(s) written (or revised) and delivered.

The diaries reflect the daily routine of military life: weather, food, drill, guard duty, and the arrival of mail. During the times of Cressy's service, the 1st Regiment was in Maryland and Virginia near Washington D.C., and the 4th Regiment was in South Carolina (Hilton Head, Beaufort, and Charleston) and Florida (Fernandina, St. Augustine, and Fort Marion). Neither regiment encountered much combat, although the 4th experienced shelling while maintaining Union batteries near Charleston.

Most of the letters from 1898-1899 were written by Cressy to his wife, Lizzie, with a few to his daughters, Lucy (Lou) and Alice (Allie), and son, Joe. There is one letter (Sept. 18, 1898) from Alice to Cressy. The letters begin with the gathering of troops of the 13th Regiment in St. Paul and their trip across the country by train to San Francisco (May 1898). In June the regiment embarked on the ship "City of Para," stopped at Honolulu, and arrived at Manila on July 31. Cressy remained at Manila until the regiment returned to the U.S. in September, 1899. The letters are frequent and detailed, especially concerning the daily routine in camp.
