Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

Files contain itemized appraisal reports, correspondence, receipts, agency agreements, news articles on client homes, obituaries, and estate sale notices. While most of the firm's clients lived in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, and included some of the social elite, a few lived in western Wisconsin and greater Minnesota.

The collection is arranged in an alphabetical sequence by client name. Files contain draft and final inventories of fine art, antiques, furniture, books, and household furnishings from estates of Minnesotans from the mid-1960s through the mid-1990s. Some of these appraisals were done for insurance purposes, but many were done around or after the death of an individual and were necessary before an estate sale could commence or before the final distribution of the estate could be completed. Some files contain newspaper clippings or magazine articles on the client's home or about the client and some contain obituaries and estate sale notices. Some also contain receipts from the estate sale, agency agreements with the client, correspondence, wills, photographs, probate court documents, and correspondence. While there are files from the Pillsburys, Daytons, Weyerhausers and other socially prominent families, most of the appraisals were from quite modest homes. There are a number of files from organizations and businesses, such as Charlie's Cafe Exceptionale (1982), the Radisson Hotel in Minneapolis, the Woman's Club of Minneapolis, and the Rectory of the House of Hope Presbyterian Church. A number of files contain book appraisals from Harold H. Lensing, who ran Harold's Book Shop, on West Seventh Street in St. Paul for many years. Thomas H. Murphy was a member of the Minnesota Antique Dealers Association, Inc.
