Expand/CollapseBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Few industries are as closely associated with Minnesota as flour milling. From 1880 on, Minneapolis enjoyed a reputation as the “Flour Milling Capital of the World.” Countless mills crowded both banks of the city’s Mississippi River waterfront, drawing power from St. Anthony Falls. General Mills still maintains its corporate headquarters near the city.

Richard L. Ferrell In 2007, the Minnesota Historical Society acquired a significant portion of the Richard Ferrell Flour Milling Industry History Collection. For 40 years Ferrell, who once managed Pillsbury’s historic A Mill on Minneapolis’s east bank, collected flour milling objects, photographs, advertisements, and memorabilia from all parts of the United States and Canada. Today his collection represents the premier record of the industry’s development from the mid-1800s to the early 2000s.

Richard L. Ferrell spent much of his career as a milling engineer and plant manager with Pillsbury. Born in 1939, he grew up near Akron, Ohio. Ferrell was hired in 1967 as a plant engineer at Pillsbury’s facility in Springfield, Illinois. His career subsequently took him to West Virginia, Minnesota, and Kansas. Although he was a lifelong collector of various interests, his work with Pillsbury first prompted Ferrell to collect milling material.

Items produced by Minnesota-based millers form the core of the collection, but it also includes material from companies in neighboring states, the Pacific Northwest, and Canada. The collection is comprised of documents and records, including company premiums, trade journals, photographs, and postcards showing mills throughout the region. Given Ferrell's association with Pillsbury, the collection also includes many items featuring that most celebrated advertising icon, the Pillsbury Doughboy.

Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

Richard L. Ferrell The collection provides a century-long view of advertising from the late 19th century through the late 20th century. Materials range from black and white and color illustrated advertisements placed in newspapers and trade journals, to recorded commercials broadcast on radio and television. In addition, the collection includes a wide array of promotional materials used to disseminate product information and enhance brand awareness among consumers. Included in the collection are calendars, lectures and demonstrations, complimentary maps, marketing material, prints, and scrapbooks.

The collection also contains more specific information about milling companies including Annual Reports, architectural drawings, legal agreements, manuals, newsletters, and periodicals.

During the mid-20th century, milling companies constructed special test kitchens to develop recipes using their various products. These recipes were then published in cookbooks either sold or given free of charge to consumers. The Ferrell Collection includes a large selection of these cookbooks.

Lastly, the collection contains photographs and postcards showing views of milling facilities, milling processes, mills under construction, mills damaged by explosions and other disasters, promotional activities, and various special events.

Though items from Minnesota-based companies dominate the collection, it also includes material from companies in North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Washington, Oregon, and Canada.
