Diary entries typically chronicle household and social events but are intermittent and fragmentary. Also includes a typed transcript of the diary prepared by Craig Johnson, Minnesota Historical Society Hill House Site Manager (1999).

Winifred Therese Lydon was born on October 28, 1886, in County Mayo, Ireland, to John and Bridget Joyce Lydon. She immigrated to the United States in 1908. By 1911, Winifred was employed as a chambermaid, working at Louis W. and Maud Taylor Hill's Summit Avenue residence in St. Paul and their farm in North Oaks, Minnesota. There Winifred met John H. Philben (1883?-1946), the Hills's gardener, whom she married in 1915. They had three children: Mary (1916-), Eileen M. (1917-1988), and Thomas F. (1922-). Winifred died on March 6, 1972.
