Maud Van Cortlandt Hill, known frequently as Maudie, was born June 1, 1903 in St. Paul. She was the second child of Louis W. Hill, president and chairman of Great Northern Railway and son of railroad baron James J. Hill, and Maud Van Cortlandt Taylor Hill. Maud and her three brothers, Louis Jr., Jerome, and Cortlandt, lived an extremely privileged life in their home on Summit Avenue in St. Paul; she attended school at Summit Academy and the family traveled extensively to their secondary homes at North Oaks Farm, in northern Ramsey County, and Pebble Beach, California, and took frequent trips world-wide. In 1933 Maud married San Francisco writer Laurence Dorcy in Del Monte, California. They honeymooned in Hawaii and settled outside San Francisco, where Maud would live the rest of her life. The births of two children, a son and daughter, quickly followed. The couple divorced in 1941. In 1943 Maud married Austrian skiing champion Hannes Schroll with whom she had two more children. Maud died on October 15, 1997 in Woodside, California.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS

Albums of photographs, clippings, drawings, and souvenir programs, invitations, and other ephemera date to the teens and twenties of Maud Van Cortlandt Hill, later Maud Hill Schroll, a privileged young woman growing up in St. Paul. The albums document the childhood of Maud and her three brothers, Maud's years in school including at Summit Academy in St. Paul, her social life and friendships, her extensive travels to California, Glacier National Park, the Caribbean, Europe, and elsewhere, and her 1933 marriage to Laurence Dorcy.

Scrapbook album of school records, clippings, event programs, invitations, tickets, calling cards, dance cards, place cards, menus, and other ephemera and four folders of loose material removed from the album containing clippings, drawings, school records, and ephemera.

A bound scrapbook volume and a number of loose scrapbook pages contain clippings primarily regarding the legal battle among the heirs of Mary T. Hill over her estate. Additional clippings document a visit of Charles Lindbergh to St. Paul, the scandalous love life of Walter J. Hill, the engagements and weddings of Louis W. Hill, Jr. and Cortlandt T. Hill, the 1933 marriage of Maud to Laurence Dorcy, the birth of Maud's first child, and railroad and other business matters of Louis W. Hill Sr. and Jr. Along with the clippings is a small amount of other material including correspondence and invitations.
