In his letters, Charles Francis Adams comments on political and military leaders of the Civil War. William Grey, Ninth Earl of Stamford, tells of the reactions of a young English nobleman to the American scene. In his letters to Hosmer, the Earl tells of his visits in various sections of the country, particularly the Midwest and the South, and his meetings with noted political and literary figures. A letter (1890) from Sir George Grey, Governor General of New Zealand and High Commissioner of South Africa, and uncle of William Grey, gives interesting data on manuscripts in the Grey family dating back to the Oliver Cromwell period.
John Fiske gives humorous descriptions of his experiences on the lecture circuit as well as literary commentaries. The earliest letter (1846) written by William Cullen Bryant to his brother John, of Princeton, Illinois, gives data on Bryant's projected speaking tour in Illinois.
