George A. Smith was born September 19, 1915, on the White Earth Reservation, the son of Thomas and Nancy (Taylor) Smith. He attended Flandreau Indian School in South Dakota, graduating in 1935. He studied for Holy Orders under the Rev. Francis Louis Carrington and was ordained an Episcopalian priest in 1942. He served on the Governor's Human Rights Commission and on the Interstate Indian Council in the 1950s. He retired from active ministry in 1980. He died December 28, 2005, in Bemidji, Minnesota.
