Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

Papers of Granville Guttersen and his mother, Alma Guttersen (Alma Pattersen before marriage). The Granville Guttersen papers include letters written by Granville Guttersen in 1918 to his parents in St. Paul (Minn.) from the U.S. Army aviation school in Texas, where he was an instructor during much of World War I and where he died of pneumonia in 1918; and his diary for a part of the same period. A scrapbook (dismantled, foldered, and partially photocopied) contains additional letters, as well as pictures, programs, clippings, and other memorabilia that show his participation in school, Boy Scout, and University of Minnesota activities.

Alma Guttersen's papers consist of a dismantled scrapbook (ca. 1889-ca. 1965) and numerous photographs (1885-1950). The scrapbook includes news clippings about Guttersen family members, letters, her marriage certificate (1889), wedding invitations for various family members, Christmas letters, biographical information, and other miscellaneous material and family memorabilia.

The photographs include pictures of Alma Guttersen, her family including children and grandchildren, her husband Gilbert Guttersen, relatives, and friends. Also included are pictures of Guttersen homes in Minnesota and California. Also included are wedding photographs for Alma and Gilbert Guttersen (1889). There are two loose tintypes (1885, 1886) of Alma Guttersen included in the Guttersen family photographs.
