Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The papers contain 4 series (subject files, Burlington Northern art collection, After the Buffalo Were Gone files, and research materials) that relate primarily to Ann T. Walton's work as an art historian, consultant, and curator in St. Paul in the 1980s, specializing in western, railroad, and Plains Indian art.

The subject files consist of correspondence, printed materials, notes, photographs, clippings, and related materials regarding Walton's role as a freelance art consultant, Minnesota Transportation Museum board member, and art professional.

The Burlington Northern art collection series contains materials compiled and created by Walton in her work both as curator of collections and as consultant for the railroad company. The series includes inventories of art commissioned or acquired by Burlington Northern or its predecessors, correspondence dealing with company business or external inquiries among other matters, and files relating to the arrangement and promotion of traveling exhibits of artwork owned by Burlington Northern or sponsored by Burlington Northern.

The After the Buffalo Were Gone series is composed of files relating to the art catalog edited and co-authored by Walton, After the Buffalo Were Gone: The Louis Warren Hill, Sr., Collection of Indian Art, and its accompanying exhibition at the Science Museum of Minnesota. These materials include correspondence between Walton and her two co-authors, John C. Ewers and Royal B. Hassrick, art object item records, chapter drafts, notes, photographs, and files concerning the administration of the project which was funded by a grant from the Northwest Area Foundation.

The research materials contain primarily photocopied magazine articles and correspondence compiled by Walton on Glacier National Park, Great Northern and Northern Pacific railroads, and other subjects as background material for her books and exhibitions.
