Ellery Foster was born in 1905 in Elmira Township, Olmstead County, Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Forestry Service, U.S. Bureau of Agricultural Economics, the War Production Board, and was a State Forester in Minnesota (1938, 1939). He was Director of Research and Education for the International Woodworkers of America (CIO) from 1945 to 1948. Marion G. Foster, born in St. Paul, worked as a newpaper reporter, social worker, and later an associate professor of sociology and/or social work at Millersville State College, Millersville, Pennsylvania. Ellery and Marion Foster were married in 1938. Ellery died in 1987 in Winona, Minnesota. Marion died in 2002 in Washington, D.C.

Ellery Foster’s papers detail his career and interests in a wide range of topics: forests and forestry; the International Woodworkers of America; land utilization; community development programs in the United States and India; housing; and peaceful alternative forms of community life and economic systems. They also include information on the May Sandrock and Milton Foster Memorial Foundation (1969-1977) started by Foster, and items written for the foundation by Foster under the pen name, El Luckywala. Marion’s papers include articles written as a newspaper reporter, and a copy of her doctoral dissertation.
