Unitarian activity in Saint Paul is said to have begun as early as 1852. Unity Church was organized in 1872 and incorporated in 1873. The first minister was John R. Effinger. Other ministers of note included William Channing Gannett, Samuel McChord Crothers, Frederick May Eliot, and Arthur Foote.

After meeting in rented quarters for some years, the congregation built a church of its own on Wabasha Street in downtown Saint Paul, which they opened in 1883. As that neighborhood began to change they built a new building at Portland Avenue and Grotto Street in the Cathedral Hill neighborhood. This structure was designed by noted Saint Paul architect Thomas Holyoke, who at the time was an associate of Cass Gilbert. The new building was dedicated December 10, 1905.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS

Administrative records include organizational and membership data; congregational surveys; attendance records; vital statistic records; correspondence, minutes, strategic and long-range planning materials, and other papers of the Board of Trustees and Executive Team; various Bylaws and Articles of Incorporation revisions (1870s-1880s, 1909, 1920s-1990s); reports and correspondence concerning annual membership meetings; financial records; fund-raising, canvassing, and capital campaign materials (1948-2010s); Planning Commission correspondence and minutes (1953-1956); records of several Architectural, Facilities, and Building Committees (1881-1927, 1956-1959, 1985-mid 1990s); real estate information regarding the various properties and buildings held by Unity; member and church directories (1960s-2010s); and annual reports of the church and the minister (1930-1999, 2001-2010).

There are also records of the Church School; several women's and social clubs and guilds; the Music and Choir Committees; Ministers Guild; Social Action Committee (1950s, 1964-1970s); Library Committee; Religious Education Committee (1880s-2000s); and miscellaneous short-term or ad hoc committees. Also included are programs for worship services, church events, baptisms, weddings, and memorials; bulletins and newsletters; clippings; records and correspondence containing information on various affiliated conferences and associations, including the Minnesota Unitarian Conference (1880s-1950s), the American Unitarian Association (1887-1961), the Unitarian Universalists Advance Conference (1988-1989), and the Prairie Star District Unitarian Universalist Association (1970s-2000s); and sermons, letters, and articles by several of the ministers, including Samuel M. Crothers, Frederick M. Eliot, Arthur Foote, Roy D. Phillips, Rob Eller-Isaacs, and various guest or interim ministers.

Programming records for the following church programs and projects are included: Unity's Wider Ministry Lecture Series (1977-1991); Unity's cable-access television program Univision (1983-1988); various social ministries programs (1986-1992); oral history projects (1989-1990, early 2000s); Unity's sister church program Partnership Church Team (PCT) (1993-2010); and records for various Anti-Racism projects, trainings, and institutional audit initiatives planned by Unity's Anti-Racism Team (2002-2007).

The sound and visual portion of the records includes photographs and negatives of the fire damage and rebuilding efforts of Unity Church (1963-1964), Arthur Foote's retirement program (April 1970), portraits and snapshots of various Unity ministers (1870s-1960s), and numerous social meetings and events (1980s-2000s). Audio and video recordings include sermons of Arthur Foote (undated, 1968-1969), Roy D. Phillips (1971-1972, 1979-1998), Gretchen Thompson (1995-1998), Kathy Fuson Hurt (1985, 1987-1989, 1999), Davidson Loehr (1999-2000), co-ministers Rob Eller-Isaacs and Janne Eller-Isaacs (2000-2010), and numerous guest speakers, interim ministers, and Hallman Ministerial interns (1970s-2010s). Audiorecordings also include: oral history interviews as part of the Frederick May Eliot Oral History Project (1990); Unity's Arthur Foote Music Sunday annual music celebration (2000s-2010s); and other Unity Church choir and music performances (2000s-2010s).

Sermon and religious education video recordings done as part of Unity's cable access program Univision are included, as well as video recordings of the Wider Ministry and Culver Lecture Series, and other meetings, events, and programs (1970s-2000s).

Partnership Church Team (PCT)

In 1990, a Sister Church Committee was formed and voted to establish a sister church partnership with a Unitarian congregation in the village of Homoródszentpéter in the Transylvania region of Romania. Since its inception, the partnership has developed into a summer pilgrimage trip of Unity members and cultural exchange program between the two congregations.
