Collapse/ExpandHerschel Vespasian Jones

Herschel V. JonesHerschel Vespasian Jones was born August 30, 1861, in Jefferson, New York, to William S. Jones and Helen (née Merchant). Herschel married Lydia Augusta Wilcox in 1885 and the couple had eight children: Tessie Wilcox (1886-1967), Carl Waring (1887-1957), Florence Purrington (1889- ), Paul Merchant (1890-1974), Jefferson (1891- ), Herschel V., Jr. (1893- ), Moses Chase (1894- ), and Frances Lois (1895- ). Herschel began working at a small Jefferson, New York newspaper when he was 15 years old, and purchased it three years later. He moved to Minneapolis in 1885, and in 1901 established Commercial West, a weekly grain and finance paper. He purchased the Minneapolis Journal in 1908. Over his lifetime, Herschel amassed a large library and art collection and made several large donations to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, where he served as a member of the board of trustees for several years. Herschel died in Minneapolis May 24, 1928.

Collapse/ExpandCarl Waring Jones

Carl Waring Jones was born in Minneapolis August 24, 1887. He graduated from Princeton University in 1911. He succeeded his father as publisher of the Minneapolis Journal in 1928, continuing until he sold the newspaper in July 1939. In the 1920s he developed an interest in magic, and became an amateur magician, a collector of books on magic and related subjects, and a publisher of books on magic. He edited John N. Hilliard's book Greater magic, which he published in 1938. His Carl W. Jones Magic Publications subsequently published several other works. Carl married Helen Thirza (née Winton) in 1921, and the couple had three children: Winton (1924-2003), Waring (1927-2008), and Thirza (1929-1997). Helen and Carl were patrons of the arts in Minnesota, and Carl served as a director of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. He was a member of the Minnesota Historical Society's executive council (circa 1950-1954), and was the Society's president (1954-1956). Carl died January 5, 1957, following a long illness.
