The Minnesota State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) and their consultants developed the Minnesota Historic Property Record (MHPR) to document certain historic properties eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Such properties include commercial, industrial, educational, institutional, and residential buildings; highway and railroad bridges; sewer lines; and similar structures. This program is primarily employed as a form of mitigation when a historic property is to be demolished or otherwise adversely affected by a new project involving state or federal funds.

A completed MHPR file typically includes a narrative report, prepared by a consultant, outlining the construction, history, historical context, features, and significance of the property, as well as photographs, negatives, and drawings relating to the property. The date given for each file is that of the final project report.
