John S. Harris was born in Seville (Ohio) in 1826. In 1847 he enlisted in Company H, 15th U.S. Infantry, and participated in the Mexican War. In 1851 he arrived at La Crosse (Wis.) where he lived until 1856, when he moved to La Crescent (Minn.). He was a gardener and florist and in 1866 helped to organize the Minnesota State Horticultural Society. He married Melissa J. Clayton in 1850 and died in La Crescent in 1901.

Includes John S. Harris's microfilmed diaries and record books (1849-1901) and two original diaries (1857, 1863). The papers provide information on fruit and vegetable culture, meetings of the horticultural society, state and county fairs in Minnesota and Wisconsin, church activities, elections (1860-1900), weather, and social life in Houston County. There are also diaries (1872-1876) and other papers (1900-1909) of his son Frank, with information about his education, his library, and horticulture.
