Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

Volume 13, Section 15, Clearwater Junction to St. CloudThe various reports, accounting records, and communications with the Interstate Commerce Commission [ICC] give very detailed information on the monetary value of every component of Great Northern [GN] operating property, most of which accounting was mandated by the ICC following its initial 1915 valuation order to U.S. railroads. Maps depict the line, right-of-way, and structures as they existed during the 1920s. Track profiles show the grade of, and related engineering information about, every mile of track within the system.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Expand/CollapseVALUATION REPORTS

Expand/Collapse 1915-1917, 1922

These reports contain statistical data relating to the Interstate Commerce Commission [ICC] valuation (as of June 30, 1915) of the Great Northern Railway Company and its branch lines in the United States. Reports are composed of valuation sheets documenting the value of the railway's properties, owned and operated, including structures, line, equipment, and rolling stock. This data was ordered by the ICC as part of an effort mandated by Congress in 1914 to evaluate the properties owned or operated by the nation's rail carriers.
In most cases, each volume corresponds to a single geographic division called a valuation section. The reports are organized by state or province; each state or province is divided into a number of valuation sections. All portions of the Great Northern's rail system are documented.

Expand/CollapseORIGINAL COST TO DATE OF EXISTING PROPERTY

The original cost volumes were compiled by the Great Northern for the ICC's June 30, 1915 valuation. The data is organized within geographical limits called schedule districts, and in most cases each schedule district is composed of two or more valuation sections.

The volumes show land costs, initial construction expenses (including engineering expenses, clearing, grading, timber work, tracklaying, surfacing and ballasting, and transportation of men and equipment), and additions and betterments. Also shown are expenses for depots, platforms, wells, stockpens, mail cranes, public crossings, and other supporting structures. Not included in the data are expenses for steel bridges, rails, ties, fastenings, switches, and spikes.

Expand/CollapseVALUATION HEARING RECORDS

The tentative valuation as of June 30, 1915 of the properties of the Great Northern Railway Company and the Montana Eastern Railway Company was completed by the ICC on March 28, 1923. Tentative valuations of the properties of closely related carriers were also completed. Each of the carriers filed a protest against the tentative valuation of its property, and two carriers filed protests against supplemental tentative valuations. Because of the close relationship between the Great Northern and the other carriers, the subsequent proceedings were consolidated. Hearings were held before an examiner of the ICC, briefs were called for, and a final oral argument was heard in October 1925. The Commission's final decision was reached on July 11, 1927.

Expand/CollapseRIGHT-OF-WAY AND TRACKAGE MAPS

This series of maps comprises the Valuation Division's master set of right-of-way and trackage maps for the entire Great Northern system. The maps were prepared as part of the 1915 valuation study mandated by the Interstate Commerce Commission [ICC]. The maps show the location of Great Northern owned track and right-of-way throughout the United States, and also show the location of yards, structures, and other real property within the right-of-way boundaries.

The maps are organized by state, thereunder by division or branch line, and thereunder by valuation section. The maps, which are very large, have been rolled onto tubes.

Almost all of the maps date from 1915, although a few were drawn or revised as late as 1928.

Related records include Valuation Division Track Profile Maps (1887-1955), and Track Profiles (1881-1960).

Expand/CollapseROLLING STOCK PROPERTY CARDS

A series of several thousand 7 inch x 9 1/2 inch cards (an individual card for each piece of rolling stock purchased by the Northern Pacific, Great Northern, or Burlington Northern, and retired by Burlington Northern during the 1984-1991 period) providing descriptive and financial data on each piece of equipment as purchased, as well as later notations summarizing subsequent modifications and major repairs, depreciation, and final disposition.

The cards are arranged by equipment number, as assigned by Burlington Northern following the 1970 merger, within each of several equipment classes: Freight cars, passenger cars (only a few are included), cabooses, and work equipment.
