Abstract:Correspondence and related papers of Gene Ritchie Monahan, her husband George Monahan, and their family. The Monahans were descendants of the James Christie family through George's grandmother Sarah Christie Stevens and were friends of conservationist Ernest C. Oberholtzer. The bulk of the collections is family correspondence. Smaller portions include letters from Vietnam written by George's brother Robert Hugh Monahan that were sent to the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Opthalmology and papers regarding Ernest Oberholtzer's estate, Mallard Island, and the Oberholtzer Foundation. A binder of Gene Ritchie Monahan's oral history and autobiographical tape transcripts are also included.

The correspondence is primarily family-related. George was in the army and was often stationed in different parts of the country; Gene was an artist and art teacher and wrote many family missives about herself, her children, and where George was and what he was doing. There is some early correspondence from the Ritchie side of the family, and extended family correspondence. There are also letters to and from and about Ernest Oberholtzer.
