Erma Johnson Kyle, born in 1892, was the daughter of Frank Bivens Johnson. Frank Bivens Johnson was born in Mankato, Minnesota, in 1862, moved to Brainerd, Minnesota, in 1882, and died in 1902. He was the son of Parsons King Johnson, who was born in 1816, who resided in Rockford, Illinois, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, and St. Paul, Minnesota, before moving to Mankato in 1852, and who died in 1907, Parsons King Johnson was the son of Charles Johnson (1774-1859), who married Eunice King. Eunice King (1786-1831) was the daughter of Simeon King and Mary Carver, who in turn was the daughter of Jonathan Carver. Another child of Simeon King and Mary Carver King was Jonathan Parsons King (1794-circa 1860), who went west from Brandon, Vermont in 1817 to explore the Jonathan Carver Claim and who later settled in Mackinac, Michigan. Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, genealogies, extracts from typewritten transcripts of letters, original letters, and a photo-graph (Parsons King Johnson). There is no systematic arrangement of materials within the volume.

Three major subject matter areas are included: the history of the Johnson and related families; the settlement of Mankato; and the grant of land allegedly made by Dakota Indians to Jonathan Carver in 1767. There is also some information on Carver's Cave, Rockford, Illinois, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, St. Paul, Minnesota, and Harriet E. Bishop, pioneer teacher in St. Paul.

Of particular interest are letters written by Jonathan Parsons King, Jonathan Carver's grandson, to Mary L. Johnson, his niece, and Eunice King Johnson, his sister, regarding the Carver Claim and his participation in the public affairs of Michigan; and letters from Parsons King Johnson to Mary L. Johnson, his sister, concerning his life in Rockford and St. Paul.
