Incorporated in 1864 under the laws of the state of Illinois, the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Company (CB & Q) operated a line between western Chicago and Burlington, Iowa. The system eventually grew to serve the states of Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Wyoming, New Mexico, and Texas. Its primary connections included Chicago, Minneapolis–Saint Paul, St. Louis, Kansas City and Denver. On March 2, 1970, the CB & Q merged with the Great Northern Railway, the Northern Pacific Railway, and the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway to form the Burlington Northern.
