BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Slade worked for the Great Northern Railway (1893-1899 and 1903-1907); for the Erie and Wyoming Valley Railroad Company (1899-1903); as general manager of the Northern Pacific Railway Company (1907-1918); as director general of the U.S. Army Transportation Corps in western Europe (1918-1919); and as an official of the Northern Pacific Railway and other businesses (circa 1919-1940). His wife Charlotte was a daughter of St. Paul railroad magnate James J. Hill.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The papers include information on Slade's railroad work, and about his family life and his relationship to the James J. Hill family. They include Slade's World War I correspondence (1918-1919); his diaries and journals; a record book (1924-1941) of wild game killed at the Slade hunting lodge near Harker Lake, Kidder County, North Dakota, and papers relating to the property and its eventual use by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a wildlife refuge; and a diary and a scrapbook kept by Charlotte Slade.
