Davis was born in Maine on June 3, 1834. He attended Bowdoin College from 1855 to 1858, and then migrated to Sherburne County, Minnesota Territory. He enlisted in the First Minnesota Regiment May 24, 1861, and served in companies I and B. He was discharged as a First Lieutenant from the First Battalion on May 3, 1864. Davis married Elizabeth S. Frees in 1866. He died at Clifton, Wisconsin, August 13, 1885.
