Peter Stephen Popovich was born November 27, 1920, in Crosby, Minnesota, to Peter and Rose (Mihelich) Popovich. He graduated from Chisholm High School, Hibbing Junior College, and the University of Minnesota. He received his law degree in 1947 from the St. Paul College of Law (later William Mitchell College of Law). In 1952 he was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives from the 40th District in St. Paul, serving until 1963. He subsequently was associated with the Minnesota State College Board and the Minnesota Commission on Higher Education. In 1983, Governor Rudy Perpich appointed Popovich to the newly-created Minnesota Court of Appeals. Perpich appointed him to the state Supreme Court in November 1987 and as Chief Justice on February 1, 1989. He retired from the court in November 1990. He died March 29, 1996, in St. Paul.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS

In addition to legislative files, the collection includes correspondence, minutes of meetings, and similar papers relating to Popovich's service on the Minnesota Higher Education Coordinating Commission and on the Minnesota State College Board. A few files contain information on Popovich's non-legislative activities, including the his involvement with the Minnesota Territorial Centennial, and correspondence and invitations to events.
