SCOPE AND CONTENTS
Letters and diaries, mainly of James and his daughter Ruth, give information on family and social life in Hudson; some of the letters were copied from loaned originals. James' reminiscence of a surveying expedition that located the Northern Pacific Railroad line in 1870 also gives data on the Northern Pacific's medical plan and the Sauk Valley region. There are two photograph albums from his wife Ellen Gibson's family.
Letters and deeds of the related John Comstock family pertain largely to family real estate holdings in Hudson. Letters of E. B. Comstock tell of his experiences in the California gold rush of 1849. Also present are materials from the First Regular Baptist Church of Hudson, the St. Croix Bible Society, and the Margaret Fuller Association.
