Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The collection consists of fairly extensive correspondence and miscellaneous papers (1902-1959), a few corporate records (1923-1957), and newspaper clippings (1924-1958) contain information on the Association's reunions, programs, deaths of members, legislative actions supporting pensions for veterans, contacts with the West Coast members, and other matters of interest to an organization composed of veterans of the Spanish American War. Also included are similar files for Company E of the Association (1930-1959) and correspondence and legal papers (1908-1951) concerning Theresa Ericksen's estate. Ericksen was a nurse who served with the regiment during the war.

Financial records, including some correspondence (1899-1902), newspaper clippings (1989-1899), and four extensive scrapbooks (1898-1899) relate to the 13th Minnesota Regiment's service in the war. There is information on routine purchases, payment of bills, a few financial reports, and occasional letters while the regiment was stationed in the Philippines. The scrapbooks contain information on the progress of the war and on the regiment's actions.

A card file containing information about deceased and transferred members of the Charles E. Bond Camp No . 9 of the United Spanish War Veterans is also included.

Includes announcements, programs, reports, and newsletters relating largely to regimental reunions, legislation germane to veterans, and news about members. The files were kept by regimental secretaries W. A. Reynolds and L. P. Burlingham.
Veterans’ legislation discussed includes bills granting pensions and bonuses, the Philippine Travel Pay Bill (1930s), and pensions for individual veterans. There is correspondence with Minnesota Senator Henrik Shipstead and with VFW legislative representative Millard W. Rice. There are also a few letters from soldiers on active duty during World War I, including two from Dr. Albert J. Chesley (July 20, 1918; March 7, 1919) describing his relief work with the American Red Cross in Europe.

Correspondence with members regarding company reunions and meetings, treasurer’s reports, rosters, secretary’s annual report (1933), correspondence and circular letters from the regimental association, and correspondence relating to pension bills and other veterans’ issues.
13th Minnesota Regimental Society of Northern California (Oakland, Calif.) bulletins, 1933-1957. 3 folders.
The monthly bulletins, which are complete through 1940 and scattered thereafter contain detailed information on the activities of this society including reunions, social events, deaths of members, veterans’ legislation in Congress, and news of general interest to members.
Newspaper clippings, 1897, 1915, 1924-1958. 3 folders.
Information on regimental actions, members’ obituaries, reunions, veterans’ legislation, General Charles McCormick Reeve, and regimental nurse Theresa Ericksen. The second folder contains clippings (1929-1950) removed from a regimental scrapbook.
