Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The papers consist largely of the autograph collection of William Amerland. The bulk of the autographs are in eighteen volumes. Although some of the autographs in these volumes are signed letters, most are simply autograph signatures, often with a salutation from the signer. Many are accompanied by newsprint photographs or other publicity about the signers. The autographs are in no discernible order, and include people from all walks of life -- writers, artists, musicians, politicians and statesmen (including many Japanese diplomats), religious leaders and spiritualists, and newsmakers -- most of them contemporaries of Amerland. Oversize materials include a number of autograph legal documents in addition to autograph signatures.

In addition to the autographs there are two folders of photographs; a few folders of news clippings and other printed matter; and two scrapbooks containing poetry collected by Amerland, as well as additional clippings, photographs and printed matter. Most of this material supports the Amerland autograph collection.
