Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The Ancient Order of United Workmen was founded in Meadville, Pennsylvania, in 1868 by John J. Upchurch as a fraternal benefit network providing members a payment at time of death. Members included tradesmen and male white collar workers. Initially, each member provided $1.00 at the death of each member to replenish the fund. Later, provisions were added to aid sick members and to help widows and children of members. The organization eventually became the Early American Life Insurance Company (St. Paul, Minnesota).
